574 Mildred Ida "Millie" (Johnson) Terhark Garbers was born on October 17, 1929 to Earl and Pearl (Dyslin) Johnson on the family farm in Murray County, Minnesota. Growing up, Millie attended country school before moving to the Balaton Public School in Balaton, Minnesota. Millie graduated from Balaton in 1947 and moved with her family to a farm by Rock Lake. On January 26, 1949, Millie was united in marriage to Stewart Glenn Terhark in the Presbyterian Church in Balaton. The young couple then moved to the Terhark family farm near Ruthton, and remained there until 1958, when the family moved to a farm in Drammen Township near Lake Benton, Minnesota. Over the course of their marriage, the couple was blessed with six children and many happy memories. After a prolonged battle with ALS, Stewart passed away on July 3, 1991. Millie continued to live on the farm. On December 26, 1997, Millie married her longtime friend, Arnold John Garbers. After their marriage, Millie moved to Arnold’s farm in rural Lake Benton. The couple enjoyed the summers in Lake Benton while they spent their winters in Yuma, Arizona. Millie remained on the Garbers farm until 2014, when she moved to the Lakeview Senior Housing in Balaton. Due to a fall, Millie was taken to the Avera Regional Medical Center in Marshall, Minnesota.

Millie passed away there on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the age of 89 years, two months, and 23 days.

Millie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lake Benton and thoroughly enjoyed attending bible study and volunteering for the vacation bible school, which she often brought her grandchildren to. Throughout the years, Millie was a devoted farm wife, helping both Stewart and Arnold with the chores. Arnold and Millie enjoyed travelling during their marriage, travelling to Alaska and going on bus tours to various places. While she was still able, Millie greatly enjoyed needlework and being able to cook and bake for her family members. One of her greatest joys was bragging about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is lovingly remembered by her six children, Steven (JoAnn) Terhark of De Land, Illinois, Cheryl (Mike) Tomschin of Springfield, Minnesota, Colleen (Paul) Brouwer of Blomkest, Minnesota, Pamela (Myron) Drietz of Backus, Minnesota, Bradley (Lorie) Terhark of Willow Lake, South Dakota, and James (Lori) Terhark of Litchfield, Minnesota; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mable Braband of Balaton; sister in law, Harriet Altman of Willmar, Minnesota; brother in law, Henry (Lavina) Terhark of Maple Grove, Minnesota; and many other loving friends and family members.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Stewart and Arnold; two infant daughters; her parents; two brothers, Orison and Burch Johnson; and several brothers and sisters in law.

589 Nancy Wagand writes: In the early 1970s I located Hendrik's son Frederik and corresponded with him until his death in 1976. Frederik sent a picture and on the back was written; taken in 1896..seated on chairs: Friederk TerHark, born March 27, 1833 in Beerta, the Netherlands; his wife, Grietje Straten, born June 10, 1833 in Weiner, Germany; next to his father, with hand on shoulder, their son Anno, between their parents their daughter, Engeline. Man on left, probably named Staal, according to Grietje TerHark, the little girl, daughter of Hendrik TerHark and Nomke Aldershoff. All emigrated to America, April 29, 1896, except Grietje TerHark, the little girl, born December 22, 1890.

Frederik also sent information on the TerHarks still living in Holland and some of the Nieman's, along with a couple of pictures. Frederik's son, Frits, visited in our home in the early 1970s. We held an open house at that time and many relatives came to meet him.
This letter was in with some of my Aunt Grace's things. I typed it exactly as possible from the original:

'GRAVENZANDE, the thirteenth of April 1936

My Dear family in America:

As you know, our Father was deceased at the 8th of November last year. It was always the best protector of his family un man with a very sound constitution, but he fell and 10 days after it he was dead. But we had yet our dear Mother, poor dear Mother, who was very ill at the burial of our Father so ill, that we thought also her to must lose. But yet we were happy to see that she grew better, at least so seemed it. But yet, we saw it, Mother had an weak constitution. The 27th of March she again was very ill and on Sunday the 29th of March, also she died.

So we have lost within five months both our best dear parents Father was 69 years old and Mother was 65 years. Never, never, we shall forget them. They had ten children and all were so happy with her father and mother. My oldest sister is 45 and my youngest 27 years old.

My dear uncles, aunts, cousins and cousins when you will write to me I'll find it very fine, I can better your language read than write, mij address is: f. terHark, chief of police 's, Gravenzande. Van de Kasteelestraat Nr. 46. (Holland)

For all you many greetings, from your unknown, but loving cousin F. terHark, my Wife Aaltje de Vries, our four children Hendrik, Klasina Nomke, Pieter and Frits and all my sisters and brothers in Holland.
