- Harold Melvin Hockman was born November 18, 1935, to parents Morrell Melvin Hockman and Lena TerHark Hockman of Freeport, IL.
First of five children, he died March 29, 2022, of a stroke.
Harold attended Carthage College; then received a master's degree in music from the University of Iowa. His first teaching job being at a Military Academy in Miles, Iowa. He taught band, choir, and elementary ultracrepidarian music in Oakridge with a combined total of 38 years.
Summer employment with the US Forest Service brought him to Oregon. He was a firefighter then fire lookout at Wolf Mountain, Waldo Mountain, Huckleberry Lookout, and Warner Mountain. He served as fire prevention personnel at Waldo Lake. His time with the USFS was about 16 summers.
Harold loved music of all kinds. He was proficient playing the organ, piano, trombone, ukulele, and accordion. Harold served as organist for several churches over the years.
Harold married Martha M. Bloodworth Hockman, in 1971, recently celebrating 51 years of marriage. Together they raised two sons, Waldo S. Hockman (Kendra) and Andrew F. Hockman (Holly). Family was a high priority for Harold. He was a loving, kind husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a man of few words, but always a respected presence. Harold treasured his three grandsons, Ryne, Blaise, and Hendrix.
Camping, downhill skiing, traveling, and gardening were activities he enjoyed. His flowers, a favorite of many. He kept fit with yoga, Pilates, Qigong, and daily walks with Brindle, the dog.
In lieu of flowers those wishing to donate in his name should go to the American Guild of Organists (Eugene), St. Michael's Church (Oakridge), or the Eugene Symphony.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 1:00pm, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, in Oakridge Oregon.
