| 315 | Edith Lorriane (Haats) TerHark was born February 14, 1935 at the home of her parents in Aplington. She was the daughter of Edward and Kathryn Haats. She graduated from Aplington High School in 1953. She and Fred were married on August 21, 1953 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They had two daughter s Rhonda and Deb. They made their home on the family farm south of Aplington. She was a busy farm wife and homemaker helping with the crops and dairy. They owned TerHark Salvage and retired in 1995 when they moved to Sleepy Hollow west of Aplington. Edee and Fred traveled all over the United States either on the motorcycle or by Amtrack. They also traveled abroad. Edee enjoyed sewing, quilting, cake decorating, ceramics and decorating her home. She was a huge Hawkeye Fan especially enjoying football. She was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington. Her life was grounded in her faith. The greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even during her final days on earth they would put a smile on her face. She is proceeded in death by her husband Fred, her brothers Albert, Ted and Calvin Haats, sister Gertrude Kramer and Cathryn Elliott and grandson-in-law Chris Morris. She is survived by her two daughters Rhonda (Dennis) Rops, Deb (Terry) Johnson, 5 granddaughters and their husbands Nicole (Mark) Day, Maggie (Rob) Gorter, Tami (Tony) Ford, Katie (Neil) Kaumans, Kristy (Mike) Priebe, and one grandson and his wife Jeremiah (Tayler) Johnson. She had 15 great-grandchildren, Nicholas (Jessica) Day, Andrew Day, Sarah (Joey) Gast, Marshall, Kenny and Keira Day, Ayden Morris, Wyatt and Rory Gorter, Charlie and Annie Ford, Olivia and Elliot Priebe, and Landry and Emersyn Johnson and two great great grandchildren Elijah and Gabriella Day, her brothers Edward (Sheryl) Haats and Kenny (Pat) Haats and one sister Elaine (Justin) Koenen and one sister-in-law Liz (Curtis) Bartlett along with many nieces and nephews. She left those who loved her on April 18, 2019 to be with the Lord. The best gift she could give her husband was to greet him there on his birthday. She died peacefully under the care of the staff at Maple Manor and Compassus Hospice. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday April 24, 2019 at 3 pm at the First Reformed Church in Aplington. There will be a time for fellowship and food following the service until 6 pm. | 324 | FAIRMONT?- A celebration of life service for Steven R. Terhark, 72, of Fairmont, Minn., will be at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery in Elmore, Minn., with full military graveside honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 of Fairmont. Steve passed away Friday morning, August 28, 2015, at his home in Fairmont. Steven Ralph Terhark was born Nov. 24, 1942, in Pipestone, Minn., the son of Chris and Meta (Brink) Terhark. He attended school in Elmore, Minn., graduating from Elmore High School with the class of 1960. Following his graduation, Steve enlisted in the United States Navy, where he worked as a flight mechanic. Steve served his country proudly during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Vietnam, Guam, Japan, Okinawa, Philippines, Hawaii and Alaska. In 1964, he received his honorable discharge and returned home to Minnesota. On July 18, 1964, Steve was united in marriage to Vicki R. Kurth in Elmore, Minn. Together the couple made their home in Minneapolis while Steve attended the Dunwoody Institute. They later moved to Spicer, Minn., before returning to Elmore, Minn., where Steve opened an auto body shop. In October 1972, Steve and Vicki were blessed with the birth of their son, Chad. The family then moved to Northrop where Steve opened another auto body shop and also worked as a supervisor for Nordaas American Homes, supervising house building crews in the five state area. Steve and Vicki later moved to Fairmont. Steve was a talented musician and played for many years with the Terhark Brothers Band. One of his favorites was playing for his son Chad's wedding reception. Steve also loved fishing. He showed his three grandkids how to fish and they always looked forward to visiting their Papa in Fairmont to go in the boat fishing together. Steve enjoyed spending time with his family and singing and playing guitar. His grandkids know when Papa comes over they are going to get plenty of "moochies" from Papa. Steve and Vicki celebrated 51 years of marriage on July 18, 2015. Steve was a member of the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 and the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36. He was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont as well as being a member of the Musicians Union. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Vicki Terhark of Fairmont, Minn.; son, Chad Terhark and his wife, Kara, and children, Mary, Graham, and Joey, of Hastings, Minn.; sister, JoAnn Mileham of Elmore, Minn.; brothers, David Terhark and his wife, Jean, of Illinois, Mike Terhark of Fairmont, Minn., and Gary Terhark and his wife, Deede of Sioux City, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Diane Rittenhouse and husband, Art of Paynesville, Minn., Kathy Ferguson and husband, Alvin of Elmore, Minn., and Linda (Kurth) Wildung of Tucson, Ariz.; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. | 331 | Fred LeRoy TerHark, age 78 of Aplington, Iowa, was born on April 18, 1933, the son of John and Hattie (Janssen) TerHark on the family farm near Aplington. He was baptized into the Christian Faith at the Christian Reformed Church in Ackley, Iowa, where he later was confirmed and became a member. He received his education and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1951. Fred served in the United States Army from April 6, 1953, during the Korean Conflict as a guard, and was honorably discharged on February 11, 1955. On August 21, 1953, Fred was united in marriage with Edith Haats at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home and farmed in the Aplington area. To this union two daughters, Rhonda and Deborah were born. For many years Fred also owned and operated TerHark Salvage near Aplington. Upon retirement they moved to their present home west of Aplington in February of 1997. Fred was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington where he served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Bible School Teacher. For many years Fred served through his church actively providing missionary work in Jamaica, Russia, Hawaii and various parts of Central America. In his free time, Fred enjoyed collecting gas engines, fixing cars, watching wrestling, woodworking and doing handy work. He enjoyed volunteering with the church's tape ministry to Maple Manor Village. Fred and the love of his life, Edee together enjoyed worldwide traveling, cruises and taking numerous motorcycle trips and tenting along the way. Most importantly he enjoyed spending time with his family especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fred passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2011, from cancer at his home in Aplington, in the presence of his loving family under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, in infancy and one grandson, Chris Morris. Fred is survived by his wife of 58 years, Edith; two daughters, Rhonda TerHark of Eldora and Deborah (Terry) Johnson of Parkersburg; six grandchildren, Nicole (Mark) Day, Margaret (Rob) Gorter, Tamara (Tony) Ford, Kristy (Mike) Priebe, Kathryn Johnson and Jeremiah (Renee) Johnson; ten great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Sarah, Andrew, Marshall, Kenneth and Keira Day, Ayden Morris, Charlie and Annie Ford, and Landry Johnson; and one sister, Elizabeth (Curtis) Bartlett of Hudson. Daughenbaugh Is Killed In Action In Germany On February 23 Mrs. Opal Daughenbaugh, 801 West Pleasant street, received a message from the war department Saturday noon stating that her husband, Pfc. Dale E. Daughenbaugh had been killed in action in Germany on February 23. He was a member of he 4th Armored division. Third army and had been overseas since January, 1945. Dale was inducted February 18, 1944 and received his basic training at Camp Stewart, Georgia. Later he was transferred to Fort Bliss, Texs, where he received advanced anti-aircraft training. Last October he was transferred to the infantry and trained at Camp Maxie, Texas. He was married November 11, 1943, to Miss Opal Long. Dale was 22 years old and the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Daughenbaugh, of Lancaster township. | 335 | Freeport Journal-Standard, Wednesday, 20 April 1932 Thomas Ter Hark, 28, who resided at 911 South Walnut avenue, died last night at a Freeport Hospital, after a brief illness. Mr. Ter Hark was born in Ridott township April 26, 1903, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Ter Hark. He was united in marriage to Mildred Daughenbaugh, of Ridott, in 1930. She survives, as do decedent's father, three brothers, John, Fred and Henry, and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Vose and Mrs. Earl Daughenbaugh, all residing in or near Freeport. Mr. Ter Hark was a cement worker and had been in the employ of the firm of Deuth & Henderson, Freeport. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Wagner funeral home, with services at 2 o'clock at the United Brethren church in Ridott. The Rev. | 337 | from a clipping in mom's scrapbook: TerHark-McCuen: The wedding of Miss Clarabelle McCuen and George TerHark took place Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. Rev. Brainerd N. Clevert was the officiating clergyman. The church was decorated with white larkspur; hydrangeas and ferns, with five and seven-branch candelabra, holding ivory candles on either side of the altar. Miss Velma Wachlin presided at the organ, playing the wedding march and accompanying Miss Effie Bruce in her two songs, "I Love You Truly" and "At Dawning." The bride wore a white satin gown, made on Princess lines, a finger-tip veil, and carried a shower bouquet of roses and forget-me-nots. She entered with her brother, Mervin Hasselman. Miss Jennie terHark, sister of the groom, was maid of honor and wore a peach colored lace dress (my note: she still had the dress and could still get into it at George and Clarabelle's 50th wedding celebration, but I can't remember if she could get it completely fastened in the back) and short face veil held in place with blue delphiniums. She carried yellow roses and delphinium. Carl Milligan was best man and the ushers were Bill Staas and Ronald Snyder. Marilyn Jean Staas and Dorothy Ann Sauer, cousins of the bride, in frocks of blue dotted Swiss and carrying French bouquets, served as junior bridesmaids. A reception followed the ceremony in the parlor of the church, ninety guests being included in the invitations. The guests were received by the bridal party and by Mrs. McCuen, who wore a navy blue dress. The bridal table held a three tiered wedding cake with miniature bride and groom topping the confection. Presiding at the table were the Misses Gertrude Elmer, Esther Fitzgerald, Velma and Violet Strohacker and Mrs. W. G. Staas. The bride, daughter of Mrs. Charles McCuen, West Clark street, is a graduate of Freeport high school, class of 1937, and is secretary of the Freeport branch of station WROK. The groom, who is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred TerHark, conducts an orchestra and teaches piano and accordion. He and his bride will live at 616 West Cottonwood street. CHILD KILLED IN CRASH DONAL ALLAN HOCKMAN LOSES LIFE IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT TUESDAY FATHER'S AUTO IS STRUCK BY ONE DRIVEN BY LENA MAN Donald Allan Hockman, nine-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Morrell Hockman of Kent, was fatally injured yesterday when the car in which he was riding with his parents was struck by a car driven by Boyd Mitchell, of Lena, in an accident which occurred at the Central school corner southwest of Lena. The child suffered a broken neck and died while on route to a Freeport hospital. Mitchell was the same driver who recently backed his car out of a service station in Lena and struck an aged man, William Reardon, 70, knocking him to the pavement where he suffered painful bruises. Three other persons riding in the Hockman car yesterday were injured, two seriously. Neither Mitchell nor Charles Thratcher, also of Lena and riding in Mitchell's car, were injured. According to Deputy Sheriff Walter Krell of Freeport, Donald Hockman was thrown from his position on the front seat of the Hockman car onto the road by the impact. The Mitchell car, Deputy Krell said, ran over the child. The car was driven by Hockman, 34, who was accompanied by his wife, Lena, 33, and children, Donald Allan, nine-months old, Caroline 2, and Charles 3. (Should have been Carolyn and Harold). Charles (Harold) received sever lacerations on the neck, cheek and chin, chest and left arm and a finger on his right hand was nearly severed. He was riding in the seat with his sister, Caroline (Carolyn) who escaped with bruises and shock. Mrs. Hockman suffered a fractured collar bone and bruises. The father received minor bruises. The mother and the son, Charles (Harold), are still in a Freeport hospital. An inquest over the child was to be conducted at the Fred Offenheiser funeral home in Pearl City this afternoon by Dr. E. Mr. Shippie, pastor of Grace Methodist church, Dubuque, Iowa, Miss Anna TerHark of Waukegan, Ill., daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred TerHark of Freeport, was united in marriage to Fred W. Riebe of Waukegan, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Fr. Riebe of Bloomington. The bride wore a floor-length transparent blue velvet gown, a corsage of Talisman roses and sun gold accessories. Her attendant, Miss Jennie TerHark, sister of the bride, wore a sun red knit dress and a corsage of yellow roses. The groom's attendant was Henry TerHark, brother of the bride. A reception was held Sunday afternoon for forty guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry TerHark, Freeport route 2. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful gifts. The out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. William F. Riebe, of Bloomington; Mr. and Mrs. Fred TerHark of Shannon, Mr. and Mrs. Morrell Hockman of Kent, and Miss Grace TerHark of Waukegan. She was still in the hospital ... has been there 3 weeks or more. She sat up yesterday and seemed to be doing ok when Judy and Jerry were there last night. Judy talked to the nurses this morning ... Aunt Ann had a bath and bows in her hair ... all ready for Judy to come. Judy and Jerry went to a friend's children's first communion first ... got a phone call while there ... Riebe, 94, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Edward White Hospital . Born in Freeport, Illinois, she moved to this area in 1998 from Waukegan, Illinois. She was a Nurse's Aid at the VA Hospital, Chicago and was a member of Women of the Moose for over 50 years, and had served as the Star Recorder. Survived by Daughter and Son In Law, Judith A an d Jerry Hall of Tampa, Florida; Son William F. Riebe; of Tampa, Florida; Three Grandchildren ; Michael A Sherwood of Clearwater, Florida; Christine Tadlock, of Thomasboro, Illinois; Troy L. Hall of Lutz, Florida; one Brother, Richard TerHark, of Freeport, Illinois. Two great Granddaughters; Sarina M. Sherwood and Ashley a Tadlock. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Fred W. Riebe in 1988 and by nine brothers and sisters.
