March 20, 1990: My son, Kevin Lee Wagand, ran into a Kevin L. terHark while both were in helicopter flight training at Ft. Rucker, Alabama.

I have had a book on that terHark family since the 1980s ... we capitalize the "H" ... they use the lower case "h". This family is mainly in Iowa and Minnesota.

I have not had a chance to type all their information into this book as of June 2000 but am working on it. They came from The Netherlands in the early 1900s.

Incidentally, Kevin L. Terhark has an aunt ... Nancy Terhark, born May 4,
1942; Kevin Lee Wagand's mother (me) is Nancy TerHark Wagand, born
November 3, 1941.

Tenant farmer around the Stephenson County area until 1965. In 1965 moved to Freeport and worked as a Pinkerton Guard at Kelly Springfield until his retirement. In 1999 still lives in his own home. Receives meals on wheels 4 days a week from the Freeport Hospital and CONTACT calls him daily for a reassurance call. No longer drives as of January 2, 1998, when he went through a stop light and hit another car. He was treated at the hospital; injuries were minor.

Likes to call The Journal Standard and have his little "sayings" AUTHished and especially likes to see his name in print.

"When farming with her husband she especially enjoyed cooking, sewing, tending her large garden (fresh vegetable soup cooked over an open fire was great!) and tending her chickens. In the late 1950s worked as the salad girl at the Red Cedar Lounge in Freeport. Then went to work at Micro Switch, Freeport, until her retirement. Loved fishing and traveling."

from the Journal Standard, March 23, 1939: "This afternoon at 1 o'clock, at the Second Presbyterian manse, Miss Catherine Dinley was united in marriage to Richard TerHark. Rev. Brainerd N. Covert was the officiating clergyman.

"The bride wore an ensemble of Mignon blue crepe, with corsage of spring flowers. The bride's father, Thomas Dinley, and Miss Jennie TerHark, sister of the groom, were the attendants.

"Richard TerHark is employed by Mr. and Mrs. Willard B. Hance on their farm "Green Gables" and he and his bride will live on the farm.
"A dinner for relatives of the two families will be served at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry TerHark this evening."

(My note: I remember mom saying that the Hance's said when they got married they weren't to have children while working there ... so they didn't have me till 1941. ... this farm was behind where "Culvers" is in Freeport now, June 2000.)

MISS CATHERINE DINLEY INJURED IN AUTO MISHAP
FREEPORT RESIDENT SUSTAINS FRACTURED PELVIS IN ACCIDENT AT WAUKESHA, WIS.
While returning from Green Bay, Wis. with other employees of the Kraft-Phenix Company of this city, Miss Catherine Dinley, 27, 214 1/2 W. Main street, was severely injured Sunday near Waukesha, Wisc., when an auto in which she was riding ran into a ditch. She suffered a fractured pelvis, numerous bruises and cuts and also suffered from shock. Other occupants of the car were not injured. Miss Dinley was removed to Waukesha Municipal Hospital, where she will remain for some time.
According to reports received here the Freeporters were crowded off the highway by another car with the result that their machine turned over several times and was badly damaged.

1981 ... Jenny Keppen and Ann Riebe remember: When their father left for America, Janna Nieman sat up all night making him a pair of socks to take along. She hadn't known until the night before that he was leaving. Her family were fishermen and they lived on a boat. She was the oldest child and never went to school, having to stay home and help with the work.

Other stories I remember hearing: Janna couldn't speak English; however, one time someone came looking for her sons and she was overheard to say, "The boys are in the potato patch." Another time, a blind piano tuner came to tune their piano ... without thinking she said, "Let me raise the shade so you can see better."
